Prime Minister

KYRIAKOS MITSOTAKIS

Kyriakos Mitsotakis was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic on July 8th, 2019.

President of Nea Demokratia since January 2016, managed to modernize his party, renew and boost its membership base, create a system of funding based on small annual donations by the members and put in place a code of transparency and accountability in the operations of the party.

He led his party to a landslide victory three years later, campaigning on a platform for jobs, strong growth and lower taxes. Nea Demokratia was the first party to win an absolute majority in the Greek Parliament since 2009.

As Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Government from June 2013 until January 2015, he spearheaded comprehensive national reforms by implementing a functional reorganization of institutions, structures and processes.

A member of the Parliament since 2004, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has participated in the Committee for Constitutional Amendment, the Committee for Trade and the Committee for National Defense. He was also an active member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

As Chairman of the Environment Committee between 2007-2009, he passionately pursued issues pertaining to climate change and advocated for the need for environmentally sustainable growth. Since then, he was the shadow-minister for the environment and climate change for Nea Demokratia until 2012.

Before entering politics, he worked for ten years in the private sector as a financial analyst with Chase Investment Bank, a consultant with McKinsey and Company and finally as CEO of NBG Venture Capital at the National Bank of Greece.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, and earned an MA in International Relations from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is married to Mareva Grabowski and they have three children, Sofia, Constantinos and Dafni.

European Commission Vice-President for Democracy and Demography

DUBRAVKA ŠUICA

Since December 2019, Dubravka Šuica is Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Democracy and Demography.

Mrs Šuica a Croatian politician from the city of Dubrovnik, where she served for two terms as its first female mayor and was awarded the 2006 World Mayor Award.

Dubravka Šuica entered politics in the 1990s as a Member of the Croatian Democratic Union and served as a Member of the Croatian Parliament and Vice-Chair of the EU Integration Committee.

Between 2004 and 2009 she was a Board Member of the Union of the Association of Towns and Municipalities of the Republic of Croatia.

During ten years she was the Vice-President of Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.

From 2013 to 2019 Dubravka Šuica served as a Member of the European Parliament and Vice-Chair of Foreign Affairs Committee.

In June 2019, Šuica was elected as the first Vice-Chair of EPP Group in the European Parliament. Since 2012, she is the Vice-President of EPP Women.

Managing Director of Eurobank

FOKION KARAVIAS

Mr. Fokion Karavias holds the position of Chief Executive Officer at Eurobank S.A. and he is Member of the Board of Directors.

He has served at Eurobank as Senior General Manager, Head of Group Corporate and Investment Banking, Capital Markets & Wealth Management and member of the Executive Committee (2014 – 2015), General Manager and member of the Executive Committee (2005 – 2013), Deputy General Manager and Treasurer (2002 -2005).

He started his career in banking in 1991, at JP Morgan, in New York, in the market risk management division. In 1994, he joined Citibank, in Athens, responsible for derivatives and fixed income business in Greece. In 1997, he joined Eurobank, as head of fixed income and derivatives trading. In 2000, he became Treasurer at Telesis Investment Bank.

He is also Chief Executive Officer of Eurobank Ergasias Services & Holdings S.A. and Member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Bank Association.

He holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, a Master’s and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He has published several papers on topics concerning his academic research. He was born in Athens in 1964.

Minister of Social Cohesion and Family

SOFIA ZACHARAKI

Sofia Zaharaki (Athens, 1976) is a Greek educator and politician. She is the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family in the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

She was born in Athens in 1976, originally from Neo Argyri, Evrytania. Her father was a secondary school theology teacher.

She studied English Literature at the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and did postgraduate studies in Comparative Pedagogy and Administration of European Educational Organizations at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

She has specialized in the teaching of the English Language, at the Institute of Education of the University of London. In the past, she had worked in public and private IEK and in public and private schools. She worked for the Ministry of Education in the European Union department and in the Lifelong Learning and Youth Secretariat.

In 2015, she represented Greece in the IVLP (International Visitor Leadership Program), as a scholarship holder of the United States Department of State, on the topic of “the role of Public-Private Partnerships in Economic Reconstruction”.

She speaks English, French and Spanish.

She was an advisor to the minister on International and European Relations at the Ministry of Development from 2012 to 2014 .

In August 2016, she was appointed deputy spokesperson for New Democracy, while in March 2019, she was appointed spokesperson for New Democracy.

On July 9, 2019, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, responsible for primary and secondary education, in the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

On January 4, 2021, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Tourism in charge of Tourism Education and Special Forms of Tourism.

She was elected Member of Parliament for East Attica with New Democracy in the elections of May 2023.

On June 27, 2023, she was appointed Minister of Social Cohesion and Family.

Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports

DOMNA MICHAILIDOU

Dr. Domna Michailidou, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, responsible for social welfare and social solidarity.

Dr. Domna Michailidou is an academic economist working on economic development and financial crises.

She has been Reform’s adviser to the Prime Minister on a series of issues related to structural reforms and financial markets. She worked for the OECD in Paris and Athens. Between 2010 and 2016 she taught several courses on Macroeconomics and Economic Development at the University of Cambridge and UCL’s School of Public Policy.

She holds an MPhil and a PhD on Financial and Development Economics from the University of Cambridge.

She held the position of Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs from 2019 to 2023.

Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family

MARIA-ALEXANDRA KEFALA

Maria-Alexandra Kefala was born on July 30, 1985 in Ioannina, where she lives. She is married.

Physician by profession specializing in paediatrics. She is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Ioannina and holds a master’s degree from the National School of Public Health “Health Promotion of Children and Adolescents”. She speaks English, French and German.

She was elected Member of Parliament for Ioannina with New Democracy for the first time in the elections of July 2019 and was re-elected in the elections of June 2023. She was Secretary of the Parliament during the period 2019-2023. From 2019 until 2022, she participated as a member of the “Special Standing Committee on Equality, Youth and Human Rights”, the “Sub-Committee on the Issues of Persons with Disabilities” and the “Sub-Committee on Combating Human Trafficking and Exploitation” of Parliament, of which she assumed the presidency from October 2022 until April 2023.

She was also a member of the “Standing Committee on Social Affairs” of the Parliament. At the same time, she was elected as Vice-President of the Economic, Commercial and Fiscal Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Cooperation Organization. During the 2019-2023 parliamentary term, she was Vice-President of the “Greece-Albania” Friendship Parliamentary Group and a member of “Greece-USA”, “Greece-Qatar”, “Greece-North Macedonia”, “Greece-Armenia” and “Greece-Egypt”.

ALEXANDRA TRAGAKI

Alexandra Tragaki is a Professor of Economic Demography at Harokopio University, where she has served as President of the Department of Geography.

She holds a PhD from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), also has a master’s degree in Economic Demography from the same University and a degree in Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She has received a scholarship from IKY for postgraduate and doctoral studies abroad and the Fulbright Award for Visiting Scholars (2013-14).

She was elected a Lecturer at Harokopio University in 2002. Furthermore, she had previously worked as a consultant in the Economic Research and Analysis Unit of the Council of Economic Experts (SOE) of the Ministry of National Economy (2000-2002) and as a researcher at the Institute for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), specializing in social security (1998-2000).

She has been a key member of the Greek delegation to the Economic Policy Committee of the European Commission, during the period Dec. 2000-Sept. 2002.

She has participated in expert committees and in various research projects.

PANAGIOTIS TSAKLOGLOU

BA in Economics (University of Thessaloniki), MA and PhD in Economics (University of Warwick).

Professor, Athens University of Economics and Business, Research Fellow of the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn) and Senior Research Fellow of the Hellenic Observatory (LSE, London). He has published over 100 books, scholarly articles and contributions to collective volumes, made over 200 presentations in conferences and workshops and participated in over 50 research and consultancy projects. His research focuses on Economics of Social Policy (inequality, poverty, social exclusion, redistributive role of the state) Labour and Education Economics (determinants of unemployment, returns to education).

Since August 2020, Deputy Minister of Labour in charge of Social Insurance. During the period 2012-2014 he was Chairman of the Greek Government’s Council of Economic Advisers and member of the EU Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and Eurogroup Working Group (EWG) as well as alternate member of Ecofin and Eurogroup. He has also been Social Policy advisor to Prime Ministers G. Papandreou (2010-2011) and L. Papademos (2011-2012) and a member of the EU Economic Policy Committee (EPC, 2010-2011). Further, he was member of the Greek Government’s Council of Advisors on Employment and Social Insurance (2001-2002), National Council for Research and Technology (2001-2005) Council of Economic Advisors (2002-2004 and 2009-2012) and member of the Independent Authority for the Evaluation of Tertiary Education (2006-2009).

MARINA STEFOU

Marina Stefou, PhD

Dr. Marina Stefou graduated from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece and holds a Master’s Degree in Law and Business Economy from the Department of International and European Studies of the Panteion University of Athens, as well as a Doctorate Degree (PhD) in International Economic Law from the same university and department.

As a Marie Curie PhD scholar of the European Commission and member of the European Corporate Governance Training Network (ECGTN), she conducted part of her doctoral research at the Department of Business Law of the University of Genoa between 2006 and 2008. She has published papers on the comparative analysis of corporate governance in Greece and Cyprus, on the American law of corporate governance (Sarbanes–Oxley Act) and its extraterritorial application and on the financial crisis and its effects on corporate governance.

In 2011 she successfully completed the executive interdisciplinary program for senior executives of the Harvard Kennedy School on the topic of “Senior Managers in Government” in Boston, US.

She has fourteen years of professional experience with the European Parliament, having worked as a scientific and political adviser to Members of the European Parliament in various Committees. Until recently and prior to the appointment as Secretary General, she has been serving as one of the two advisers of the European People’s Party Group (EPP Group) in the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) of the European Parliament.

She has specialized experience in the drafting and technical negotiation of European legislation on various topics, including financial governance, constitutional affairs and human rights, employment policies and jobs creation, promoting equality policies, pay transparency and equal pay for equal work, combating gender discrimination and stereotypes, developing demographic policies and affordable housing policies in the Members-States, as well as promoting policies on the reconciliation of personal/family life and professional activity.

She has participated, on a technical-advisory level, in the informal working group for the European Child Guarantee, concerning vulnerable children and combating child poverty.

Marina has also served as President to the Board of the Greek Research Centre for Gender Equality (KETHI) since 2022 and until her recent appointment.

NIKOLAOS VLAHOS

Dr. Nickolas Vlahos was born in Athens in 1965.

He graduated from the University of Athens Medical School in June of 1989 with Honors.

Immediately following, he served for 2 years as a Second Lieutenant in the Hellenic Military Air force.

Following the completion of his military service and his medical service in underserved areas in Greece, he was accepted by the State University of New York, where he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1992-1997) and became Board Certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In 1997 Dr. Vlahos was accepted as a fellow by the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore USA, where he trained for three years in order to attain the subspecialty in Reproductive Endocrinology.

The Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowship included comprehensive training in all of the assisted reproduction techniques, including, IVF, GIFT, ICSI, as well as all of the advanced Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic surgical techniques.

In July of 1999 the University of Johns Hopkins offered Dr. Vlahos the position of Lecturer in Reproductive endocrinology.

In the year 2000 following written and oral exams he became Board Certified as a Reproductive Endocrinologist.

In July of the Year 2000 Johns Hopkins University offered Dr. Vlahos the position of Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

The years 2000-2004 were spent working as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA.

In 2001 Dr Vlachos was proclaimed Director of the department of Endometriosis and Laparoscopic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital ; in the same year he also undertakes the responsibilities of Co-Director for the department of Assisted Reproduction and IVF.

In September of 2004 Dr. Vlahos is offered the position of Assistant Professor at the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens, as director of the division of Assisted Reproduction.

In December of 2010 he is promoted to the position of Associate Professor and he became the director of the department of Endoscopic surgery of Aretaieio University Hospital.

In May of 2015 Dr. Vlahos was promoted to the position of Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Assisted Reproduction

Dr Vlahos has been commended by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy Surgery ( AAGL) for his exemplary performance in laparoscopic surgery, he has been awarded the title “Top Doc In America for Endometriosis and IVF” and has been nominated several time for the WHO IS WHO in AMERICA as well as WHO is WHO in Medicine and Health Care. He has been the principal author of more than 100 scientific publications and contributing author for 8 medical books.

He has been a reviewer for several scientific journals in the field of IVF and endoscopic surgery and he has organized several courses in endoscopic surgery and IVF.

His main areas of interest are: infertility and assisted reproduction, IVF, endometriosis, and advanced endoscopic surgery.

VASILEIOS KELLARIS, MD, MSC, PHD

Vasilios Kellaris was born in Athens. He is a medical graduate of NKUA (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), while he served as a Resident Obstetrician at “ATTIKON” University Hospital, having completed part of his training at “Elpis” and “Aglaia Kyriakou” Children’s hospital.

He holds a Master’s degree in High Risk Pathology Pregnancy and a PhD from the Medical School of NKUA.

He also holds a Diploma in Specialization in Management and Organization of Health Units from the Open University of Athens, an A.L.S.O. Diploma (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics, U.K.) and a Certificate of the Vocational Training Centers (KEK) in “Human Reproduction”.

He is further educated in the field of Infertility and Assisted Reproduction Methods at the University Hospital UZ Brussel. Additionally, he is a Certified Sonographer and holds a “Focus on Gynecology” Diploma and a ISGE Certification (International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology).

He is Vice President of “Mitera” hospital, Vice President and co-founder of the “Hygeia IVF Embryogenesis” Center and Co-founder of the Non-profit Organization for infertility and birth deficit Be-Live.

Moreover, he is a Research Fellow of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine (E.E.A.I.) and member of the Coordinating Committee for Human Reproduction of C.V.T. (Vocational Training Center).

DR HARRY HINIADIS

Dr Harry Hiniadis is a Reproductive Gynecologist and founding member of HYGEIA IVF Embryogenesis. He is Member of the Board of Directors of Mitera Hospital and co-founder of the Non-Profit Association for the Assistance of Reproduction “Be-Live”.

He specialised in Obstetrics & Gynecology in the UK for 6 years at esteemed institutes such as King’s College Hospital, Royal London Hospital, Medway Maritime Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, and King George Hospital. Whilst at King’s College Hospital, London, Dr Hiniadis was research fellow at the Harris Birthright Unit for Fetal Medicine.

He specialised in IVF and Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery (Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy) and worked in the Assisted Reproduction Unit of Saint Bartholomew’s University Hospital, London.

Between 2004-2021 he was an associate of the of Mitera IVF Unit, where he has served as Scientific Director.

He has obtained the European Diploma in Gynecological Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy, Université d’Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, the Diploma of Console Surgeon in Robotic Laparoscopy, Strasbourg, the Diploma of Faculty for Family Planning of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) and the A.L.S.O. Diploma (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics), U.K.

He is a certified ultrasonographer, and holds the Diploma of the Hellenic Ministry of Health for Gynecological and Obstetric Ultrasound.

He teaches in the Postgraduate Program “Human Reproduction” of the Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace, as well as the sixth-year students of the Medical School of the European University Cyprus at Hygeia Hospital.

Through Be-Live he provides free of IVF treatment across Greece and works against the decline of global fertility rate.

PAVLOS BALTAS

Pavlos Baltas is a Researcher (Grade C) in Institute of Social Research (IKE) at the Greek National Center for Social Research (EKKE).

He has worked at Observatoire Démographique Européen (ODE) of Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (INED) in Paris and in several research projects on Demographic Analysis, Population Projections, Data Analysis and Thematic Mapping.

His current research interests are lying in the areas of Demographic Analysis, Population Geography and the use of Big Data (Satellite images and Social Media Data) in social sciences.

He has been an adjunct lecturer at University of Bordeaux, University of Thessaly, Athens University of Economic and Business, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and at University of Aegean.

He holds a PhD in Demography, a MSc entitled “Population, Development and Prospective” and a MSc entitled “Planning and Regional Development”.

Regional Governor of Attica

GEORGE PATOULIS

George Patoulis was born in Athens, Greece. He entered the Athens Medical School and specialized in Orthopaedic surgery at the Athens Laiko Hospital, where he also wrote a doctoral thesis. He is specialised in Health Economics and graduated from the National School of Public Health.

He was elected in the Board of the “LAIKO” Hospital, while at the same time he established the Association of the Trainee Doctors of Athens and Piraeus.

In 1997, he established the “Young Doctors” Pan-Hellenic Society and in 2002 the Association of the Freelance Doctors of Attica, where he still holds the position of the Honorary President. In 1998, he was elected municipal counsellor for the first time at the Municipality of Pefki, where he has formed the institution of Municipal Medical Centre.

In 2006, he was elected for the first time Mayor of Amaroussion in the Region of Attica. In 2010, he was re-elected with 57% and in 2014 he was again elected for the third time as a Mayor with 60%.

At the same time, he established the National Hellenic Inter-Municipal Network of Healthy Cities, while he also became the President of Association of Municipalities for the Protection and Restoration of Penteliko.

In June 2011, he was elected for the first time President of the Athens Medical Association. He was re-elected in the same post in October 2014 and October 2018, the last time achieving a percentage of 55%. In parallel, in January 2012, he became one of the founding members of the Social Mission Clinic.

In October 2014, he was elected President of Central Union of Municipalities of Greece, while in 2015 he was elected Vice President of the Council of Municipalities and Regions of Europe (CEMR), where he was elected again in December 2016.

In February 2018, he was elected President of ELITOUR.

In the Local Administration elections in 2019, he was elected Regional Governor of Attica with 66%. In October 2019, he was elected A’ Vice-President of the Association of Regions. Apostolos G. Papadopoulos studied Sociology in Greece (Panteion University of Political and Social Sciences) and in the United Kingdom (London School of Economics) and received his PhD in Human Geography (University of Sussex).

He was Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Department of Geography (2009-2011),Vice-Rector of Economic Affairs and Development (2011-2015) and Dean of the Faculty of Environment, Geography and Applied Economics (2017-2018) at Harokopio University.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the international peer-reviewed journal Sociolologia Ruralis and Associate Editor of NEW MEDIT: Mediterranean Journal of Economics, Agriculture and Environment.

His research interests include: rural space and society, socio-spatial transformations, mobility, international migration, refugee flows, sustainable development, rural policy, and migration and asylum policy.

She was born and raised in Agios Efstratios, attended school on the island, is a graduate of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Education of the University of Patras, has been involved with the public since 2010, as a municipal councilor, President of the Municipal Council and was elected for the first time Mayor in 2014. Antonis Makris comes from Agios Efstratios where he lived all his student years. He lives permanently in Lemnos with his family.

He has been the Education, Development and Quality Assurance Manager of the Center for Lifelong Learning of the Municipality of Agios Efstrati.

He has been an implementation manager in a multitude of European training programs to combat unemployment, on the island of Lemnos. Konstantinos Dimtsas was born in February 1969 in Larissa and lives permanently in Piraeus.

He studied at the Law School of the National University of Athens but from a very early time he became interested and involved in journalism. He is a member of the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers. He started his journalistic career from the Thessalian newspapers “Ημερήσιος Κήρυκας/Daily Herald” and “Ελευθερία/Freedom” as well as the magazine “Στιγμές/Moments”. He also became Managing Editor at “Press Time” and Editor-in-chief and political editor at “Αδέσμευτος Τύπος/Unaligned Press”. He worked as a political reporter at the television stations “ANTENNA”, “STAR” and “ERT”, at the radio stations “FLASH”, “OH! FM”, and “ERA” as well as in many magazines.

He has carried out more than 70 missions outside Greece and has interviewed political figures of international scope, some of which were broadcast by American and European media such as: Yasser Arafat, Glaukos Cleridis, Bulent Ecevit, Suleiman Demirel, Mesut Yilmaz, Felipe González, Romano Prodi, Andreas. Since September 1, 2019, he is the Mayor of Argithea.

Adonis Georgiadis was born on November 6th, 1972, in Athens. He is married to Eugenia Manolidou and they have two children, Perseus and Alcaeus. He graduated from the Faculty of History & Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.

She has participated in the work of the UN and in the 67th session of the UN Commission (UN CSW67) in March between 6-17/2023 in New York, while she has been invited to a number of international conferences, seminars as a speaker and coordinator of thematic sections.

She is the author of two monographs “Economy, Development, Environment. Theoretical Approaches and Sustainable Development Policies” (Papazisi Publications 2008), and “Sustainable Economic Development. The Integration of the 17 UN Goals.
